Planning Permission Granted
Planning permission was granted in early 2020 for the demolition of the building to provide a new twelve-storey hotel building. The proposals included 200 5* hotel rooms, with luxury amenities, including rooftop bar and terrace.

Autumn 2020
Demolition Halted 
As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, one of the major operators involved in the previous hotel proposal pulled out of the scheme and work on 5 Strand stopped. The building has been left in a state of partial demolition since then.

Summer 2022
Whitbread Acquire Site
Whitbread acquired 5 Strand in July 2022 and have prioritised making the site safe. Following a meeting with residents a number of immediate actions were taken including replacing the monoflex to the scaffold and removing asbestos. Actions have also been taken to improve visibility and reduce anti-social behaviour.

Early engagement with residents and stakeholders
Conversations with neighbours and local stakeholders begin including pre-application discussions with planning officers at Westminster City Council.

Public Consultation
Following meetings with residents last year, plans have been progressing with the project team for a planning application. Public consultation has now launched on revised proposals for 5 Strand.

Planning application submitted
Our ambition is to submit a full planning application for 5 Strand in autumn 2023. Before we do so, we envisage further discussions on our plans with Officers at Westminster Council, our neighbours and local stakeholders including a further round of public consultation.
