5 Strand is a partially demolished former office building with planning consent for hotel use.
We intend to submit a new planning application to Westminster City Council to retain the use and create a new hotel building.
The principles of the development we intend to create are below:
Bringing a vacant, partially demolished building back into long-term use
A hotel that sits within the height and footprint of the consented 2019 scheme
Providing c.700 modern and accessibly priced hotel rooms
Create a publicly accessible ground floor restaurant and lounge
In line with Whitbread’s target of becoming a net zero business by 2040
Working with the community and employing Westminster residents
Carefully designed to minimise impact on local residents.
Our proposals will sit within the height and footprint of the consented 2019 scheme.
The rooftop bar, planned in the 2019 scheme will be removed, and part of the ground floor will be converted into the Bar + Block restaurant as well as publicly accessible workplaces.
With these ‘destination’ elements removed, the impact of the hotel on the local community will be less than the ‘full service’ hotel proposed in the 2019 application.

Spring 2020
Planning Permission Granted
Planning permission was granted in early 2020 for the demolition of the building to provide a new twelve-storey hotel building. The proposals included 500 5* hotel rooms, with luxury amenities, including rooftop bar and terrace.
Autumn 2020
Demolition Halted
As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, one of the major operators involved in the previous hotel proposal pulled out of the scheme and work on 5 Strand stopped. The building has been left in a state of partial demolition since then.
Spring 2023
Public Consultation
Following meetings with residents last year, plans have been progressing with the project team for a planning application. Public consultation has now launched on revised proposals for 5 Strand.
